CLASSICAL CONCERT AT THE cHURCH

Chris Blake Returns!

We are pleased to announce the welcome return of Chris Blake to Clipston Church. You may remember his previous visits as piano soloist and later with Soprano Melanie Armitstead. This time he’s bringing two distinguished woodwind players.

In the 1970’s and 1980’s, the Elysian Wind Quintet was one of the foremost chamber music groups in the UK. The group won prestigious competitions, recorded for the BBC as well as Swiss, French and Belgian Radio. The Elysians gave concerts across Europe including recitals in Sophia, Bulgaria and West Berlin during the Cold War. Concerts in London included recitals at the Purcell Room and St. John’s, Smith Square. The group’s CD of Holst’s Piano and Wind Quintet is still available 35 years on. We welcome 3 members of the group in a re-union with a difference! Each player has been on quite a personal journey combined with their musicianship and they will share their tales with us.

Chris Blake was for 31 years Principal Horn of the Ulster Orchestra, leaving to develop music tuition for children with learning difficulties and founding the company RiChmusicNI while continuing to perform as a professional pianist.

Martin Burrell was Principal Clarinet with Malmo Symphony Orchestra, Sweden and then with the orchestra of Scottish Opera before leaving to become an Anglican Minister. He hit the headlines early in his career for sacking the church choir but later developed a very special ministry to the Roma people. Martin discovered he was also an author as he wrote a book “The Pure in Heart” about his experiences. Martin will delight us with his clarinet playing including the slow movement of Mozart’s Clarinet Concerto.

Richard King had to make a hasty exit from his job as Principal Bassoon of the Tehran Opera Orchestra at the time of the Islamic Revolution in Iran (at the same time as the events depicted in the film Argo). He then became Principal Bassoon of the Halle Orchestra. Like Martin, he left to become an Anglican Minister. Richard left the bassoon behind but took up Soprano and Tenor Saxophone and now enjoys playing both Classical and Jazz music.

Chris, Martin and Richard will play more selections from the Classic FM top 100 most popular classical music in a varied programme. This is a very rare opportunity to hear 3 of the best professional musicians bring their many and varied experiences to their musical performances.

An event not to be missed!
